Denmark Giving F-16 Jets To Ukraine Leads To Conflict "Escalation": Russia

Denmark and the Netherlands on Sunday announced they would provide the advanced jets to strengthen Kyiv's Soviet-era air force.

Washington had announced its approval of the F-16 transfers on Friday.

CopenhagenRussia's envoy to Denmark on Monday warned that Denmark's intention to give Ukraine American F-16 fighter jets to fend off Russia's incursion amounts to a "escalation" of the crisis.

On Sunday, Denmark and the Netherlands said they will donate modern jets to Kyiv to bolster its Soviet-era air force as it wages a grueling counteroffensive against Russian soldiers in the east.

Volodomyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, paid a visit to Denmark on Sunday. While there, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that her nation would send 19 of the planes, six at the end of this year, eight the following year, and five in 2025.

According to Vladimir Barbin, the Russian ambassador to Denmark, "the decision by Denmark to donate 19 F-16 aircraft to Ukraine leads to an escalation of the conflict."

Sergei Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, declared in July that Moscow would view the F-16s as a "nuclear" danger due to their ability to transport atomic weapons.

"Denmark seeks to leave Ukraine with no choice but to continue the military confrontation with Russia," Barbin said. "By concealing behind a premise that Ukraine itself must determine the conditions for peace."

A position like that "pushes Ukraine into the depths and condemns its people to become new victims."

On Friday, Washington had said that the F-16 transfers were approved.
