New Delhi : On Monday, the Parliament held a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Law and Justice to debate the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) issue. The Center's plan to put the UCC into effect was questioned at the meeting by the opposition parties.

Both the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) did not attend the conference. In the meantime, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led administration came under fire from the Congress, DMK, and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) for implementing the UCC.

The parties argued that the UCC's introduction now is necessary given that there are only 300 days till the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The government was charged by the three parties with targeting one community by enacting the Uniform Civil Code.

Here's what different opposition parties said in the meeting:

According to sources, Congress MPs questioned the government's desire to introduce the Uniform Civil Code at the meeting of the Parliament Standing Committee of Law and Justice because the 21st Law Commission report made it abundantly evident that the UCC was not necessary.

 • Taking the same lines, the DMK, Congress, and BRS MPS questioned what would happen to the rights of STs, northeastern states, and portions of Southern states given that they practice various rites.

 • The DMK said that the UCC's implementation would revoke the state's authority to determine the appropriate rituals for its citizens

. • Malook Nagar, a member of the Bahujan Samaj Party, criticized opposition parties for politicizing the UCC issue.

• The committee's chairman announced that a second meeting would be held to discuss the matter and that he would invite additional constitutional stakeholders.

After Prime Minister Modi's comments in Bhopal on June 27 in front of the assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, the discussion on the UCC reemerged. Notably, for the past four years, the UCC has been under consideration. Tuesday, PM Modi declared in a speech to BJP members in Bhopal that the nation could not operate under two sets of laws. He continued by saying that the Indian Constitution included the Uniform Civil Code.

What is UCC?
The country has proposed the Uniform Civil Code as a means of creating and enforcing individual citizen laws. Once established, these rules will be equally applicable to all residents, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender, sex, or religion. Currently, the personal laws of each community are governed by its religious scriptures. The state shall endeavor to establish a Uniform Civil Code, according to Article 44.
According to rumors, the government intends to introduce the UCC during the monsoon session of the Parliament.
