US was aware of Vladimir Putin's preparations for a coup? Kept it a Secret because

Only the most senior members of the government had access to the intelligence, even within the US.

Yevgeny Prigozhin and Vladimir Putin

According to CNN, US intelligence personnel obtained precise and thorough preparations for the brief uprising against Russian President Vladimir Putin led by Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin. The study said that the intelligence was kept secret and was only given to a select group of allies, including the UK. The information covered where and how Wagner intended to advance.

When the Russian ministry of defence announced on June 10 that private military companies like Wagner would be required to sign contracts with the military in July and would then be absorbed by the ministry, including Wagner, US officials were unsure when Prigozhin would take action. However, Prigozhin decided to move forward with his plan as a result.

Only the highest-ranking members of the government had access to the intelligence since it was so top-secret, even within the US. In order to prevent Russian bloodshed, Prigozhin explained, he had stopped his march at this point.

According to the study, the onslaught and the rapidity with which Wagner forces marched into Rostov-on-Don were caught off surprise by the secrecy, which included some top European authorities as well as senior officials across the US government.

One source with knowledge of the material told CNN that "it was an extremely tight hold," and several NATO officials voiced disappointment that the intelligence was not released. It was underlined that doing so would have run the danger of jeopardising exceedingly private sources and procedures.

Due to concerns that communications between US and Ukrainian authorities would be intercepted, even Ukrainian officials were not informed in advance of the intelligence. Following the uprising, US President Joe Biden met with allies including the presidents of France, Germany, the UK, and Canada as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He conveyed the knowledge the US knew about the uprising during those meetings, according to officials, CNN said.
