Biden Drops In At Britain PM Rishi Sunak's London Office Ahead Of NATO Summit

Biden arrived in London late on Sunday to begin a three-nation trip that includes the NATO summit in Lithuania, where allies hope to express their support for Ukraine against Russia's incursion even though they have not yet admitted Kyiv as a member of the organization.

London/Windsor : On the way to a NATO conference intended to demonstrate Western determination against Ukraine, US President Joe Biden visited Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's office in London and praised the two countries' "rock solid" friendship. Britain is Washington's closest partner.


Biden arrived in London late on Sunday to begin a three-nation trip that includes the NATO summit in Lithuania, where allies hope to express their support for Ukraine against Russia's incursion even though they have not yet admitted Kyiv as a member of the organization.

Both parties downplayed the president's fifth meeting with Sunak in as many months, calling it merely a continuation of ongoing discussions, even though it was Biden's first trip to the Downing Street office of the British prime minister as president.

Additionally, Biden will visit King Charles later on Monday despite missing his coronation in May in accordance with US presidents' customary practice. They're going to talk about climate change, which the monarch has long supported.

Sunak said to Biden as they were sitting in the Downing Street courtyard, "Great for us to continue our conversations.

We have a lot to discuss, Biden retorted. Our bond is strong as a rock.

Before the NATO summit in Lithuania, which begins on Tuesday and will be dominated by the Ukraine situation, the two leaders will exchange notes, according to Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser for the White House.

Ahead of the trip, Biden urged caution for now on Ukraine's campaign to join NATO, saying the alliance could get drawn into the war with Russia due to NATO's mutual defense pact.

"I don't think there is unanimity in NATO about whether or not to bring Ukraine into the NATO family now, at this moment, in the middle of a war," Biden said in a CNN interview that aired Sunday

CLUSTER MUNITIONS

A few days after deciding to send American cluster munitions to Ukraine, Biden made his trip.

More than 100 nations, including the UK, have banned these weapons because they are seen to pose a threat to civilian populations since they frequently disperse a large number of smaller bomblets that can indiscriminately kill people across a large region.

The Convention on Cluster Munitions, which forbids the development, stockpiling, use, and transfer of the weapons, is not ratified by Russia, Ukraine, or the United States.

"I think you find Prime Minister Sunak and President Biden on the same page strategically on Ukraine, in lock step on the bigger picture of what we are trying to accomplish, and as united as ever," Sullivan said on Sunday.

When questioned about cluster munitions on Saturday, Sunak responded that Britain was a signatory to the agreement that forbids their use and pledged to continue contributing to Ukraine's support.

The 80-year-old president will meet with the 74-year-old king at Windsor Castle after his meeting in Sunak to discuss ways to encourage private investment in the fight against climate change, a crisis that both leaders consider to be existential.

"The king's commitment to the environment in particular has earned the president a great deal of respect. On this matter, he has been a resounding voice, Sullivan told reporters Sunday while riding on Air Force One.

According to Sullivan, Biden wants to strengthen his friendship with the British king. Charles has received accolades from Biden in the past for his advocacy of environmental problems.

According to the king's office, Biden will be greeted by the monarch in the quadrangle of the castle, where a guard of honor will render a Royal Salute and the American national anthem will be played.

Biden and Charles, who don't know one another well, had a "incredibly warm" phone discussion early this year. Last year, Biden and First Lady Jill Biden both attended the funeral of the king's late mother, Queen Elizabeth, as well as the coronation of the new monarch.
