Carrying Essentials, First Goods Train Enters Manipur After Nearly 2 Months

Chief Minister N Biren Singh was present at Khongsang railway station in the state's Tamenglong district to welcome the train, marking his first visit to a tribal-dominated district since ethnic violence flared up in the state on May 3.
  
The train was carrying foodgrain and other essentials that are in short supply in the state.
Imphal: Today, the first freight train from Guwahati chugged into the state of Manipur, which has been plagued by unrest for nearly two months. Food grains and other necessities that are in low supply in the state were being transported by the train. 

For the first time since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3, Chief Minister N Biren Singh was present at Khongsang Railway Station in the state's Tamenglong district to greet the train. On May 5, train services were terminated. 


"It was an honor to be present for the historic arrival of the first goods train at Khongsang Railway Station today. For the people of Manipur, this milestone heralds a wealth of prospects and promises quick shipping of products and necessities, Mr. Singh tweeted.
"Seamless logistics will surely spur industrial development, increase trade, and eventually improve people's quality of lives. Thankful to the Hon. PM Shri @narendramodi ji for his crucial contribution to improving the state's economic prospects through this historic initiative," he continued.






According to sources with the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), Manipur will soon receive onions from Maharashtra, potatoes from West Bengal, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) from Assam. 


 


A temporary platform was set up in Khongsang railway station to expedite the arrival of necessities in Manipur, according to announcement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to the state from May 29 to June 1. 


Sabyasachi De, chief of public relations for NFR, announced that the Khongsang railway station in Manipur's Tamenglong district is now open for the loading and unloading of food and other essentials.The Jiribam-Imphal new line project includes the Khongsang station, which opened in 2022. 

The violence in Manipur, which started on May 3 when a "Tribal Solidarity March" was organized in the hill regions to protest against the Meitei community's desire for Scheduled Tribe classification, has claimed the lives of over 140 people and injured over 3,000 others. Over 50,000 people are still without homes.
