Imran Khan Reveals Plan If His Political Party Gets Banned In Pakistan
Questioned on the impact of a possible ban on his electoral future by Nikkei Asia, Imran Khan said, "If they remove the party then we will form a party with a new name and still win the elections.
Imran Khan was quoted saying "even if they disqualify me and throw me in jail, the party will still win".
Islamabad: Imran Khan, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has stated that if his party is outlawed, he will launch a new political party to run in the 2018 general elections and win those elections, according to a story in Dawn citing Nikkei Asia.
English-language publication Dawn is from Pakistan.
Many government politicians had urged for a ban on the party following the May 9 violent statewide rallies and the subsequent crackdown on the demonstrators and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
The only option, according to Pakistan's Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, is to outlaw the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also stated that his party will not oppose any move to impose a ban on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated that a measure to that effect was being explored.
Nikkei Asia questioned Imran Khan on the potential effects of a ban on his ability to run for office. Imran responded, "If they remove the party then we will form a party with a new name and still win the elections."
According to a comment by Imran Khan, "the party will win even if they disqualify me and throw me in jail."
The leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf stressed to the publication that his support base "remains intact," although asserting that the nature of national politics has "fundamentally changed."
Imran Khan stated that the government was "still trying to break it through intimidation" in regards to the ongoing onslaught on his party.
