On Monday, the number of people killed as a result of the deadly suicide bombing at the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) workers' convention in the Bajaur region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reached 54. According to police, a preliminary investigation on Monday pointed to the IS-affiliated Daesh terrorist group as being responsible for the fatal suicide bombing. However, no one quickly took credit for the attack on Sunday that left over 200 people injured.

More than a thousand people were gathering under a big tent on Sunday at around 4 o'clock as their party prepared for likely parliamentary elections in October or November.

Explosions in Pakistan

It is important to note that explosions occur frequently in Pakistan. The government claims that "Afghani terror" organizations are to blame for the rise in terrorist actions, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which borders Afghanistan internationally.

A police officer was slain earlier last week in a suicide bombing at a revered mosque in northwest Pakistan. In the tribal Jamrud tehsil bordering Peshawar, the Ali Masjid (mosque) blast claimed the life of an additional SHO named Adnan Afridi, according to the police.

The bombing on Sunday was one of the four deadliest incidents to occur in northwest Pakistan since 2014, when the Taliban attacked an army-run school in Peshawar, killing 147 people, predominantly youngsters.

A Peshawar mosque was bombed in January, killing 74 people. And in February, an explosion at a mosque inside a high-security complex housing the Peshawar Police Headquarters claimed the lives of over 100 people, the most of whom were police officers.

The blast blew minutes after PM Shehbaz applauded the police force

It's interesting to note that today's explosion took place almost two minutes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended law enforcement officials, particularly the police, for making the "best arrangements" possible for Ashura Day festivities. The religious service was conducted peacefully and without "any untoward incident," which was praised by the authority.

"On a calm Ashura day, the efforts of all law enforcement authorities, particularly the police, are admirable. In order for people to celebrate Ashura Day in peace and religious piety without any untoward incidents, the Interior Minister and his team, Chief Ministers, Provincial Interior Ministers, including Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, IGs and administration made the best arrangements, he had tweeted at 4:04 PM today.
