Chandrayaan-3: Indian spacecraft successfully enters moon's orbit

Chandrayaan-3: The Indian spacecraft has successfully entered the orbit of the Moon, according to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Saturday. Chandrayaan-3 will write a new chapter in India's space journey.

Chandrayaan-3 covered two-thirds of distance to Moon

Earlier on Friday, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) announced that the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft had traveled roughly two-thirds of the distance to the Moon since its July 14 launch.

ISRO announced on Twitter that the Lunar Orbit Injection will take place around 7 p.m. on August 5. ISRO has lifted the spacecraft into orbits farther and farther away from Earth in five trips in the three weeks since.

Trans-lunar injection

On August 1, the craft was successfully launched from Earth's orbit toward the Moon. Chandrayaan-3 escaped from Earth orbit after the trans-lunar injection. The spaceship then took a path that brought it close to the moon.

Today, the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft will be inserted into the Moon's orbit in another critical maneuver.

Health of India's third lunar mission is normal

According to ISRO, the maneuver will be carried out when Chandrayaan-3 is at its perilune, or closest point to the Moon. The third lunar mission from India is in good health, according to the space agency, and a gentle landing on the moon's surface will be attempted on August 23.
