GST Council To Virtually Meet Tomorrow, Discuss Tax On Online Gaming, Casinos

New Delhi:The GST Council will convene by videoconference on Wednesday to examine and make a decision on the proposal to impose a 28% GST on online gaming, casinos, and horse racing, according to representatives of the finance ministry.

The meeting will be presided over by Council Chair Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Finance for the Union.

The GST Council resolved to impose a standard 28% tax on the full face value of wagers made in online gaming, gambling, and horse racing during its meeting on July 11.

The members will decide whether to approve the proposed modifications to the GST law during their meeting tomorrow.

To investigate the concerns surrounding taxation on casinos, horse racing, and online gaming, a Group of Ministers (GoM) was established.

In its 47th meeting, the GST Council considered the GoM's first report, which it received in June 2022. At that meeting, it was decided that the GoM might revisit all the problems.

The 50th GST Council meeting just concluded, and the GoM presented its report there. The GoM proposed in its second report that since no agreement could be achieved on whether online gambling. 

Horse racing, and casino operations should be taxed at a rate of 28% on the full-face value of bets placed, the GST Council make the final decision.

The country implemented the tax on goods and services on the first of July 2017.
