Pakistan former PM Imran Khan
A district and sessions court on Saturday charged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan in the Toshakhana case and sentenced him to three years in prison, marking a momentous turn of events.
Imran Khan was found to be legally responsible for "corrupt practices" in the Toshakhana case by an Islamabad trial court on Saturday, according to the English-language newspaper Dawn.
Imran Khan was also ordered by the court to pay a fine of Rs. 1 lakh, and Geo Television reported that if he doesn't, he will have to spend an additional six months in prison. He will be unable to run for office for the next five years.
Imran Khan is the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Islamabad Police.Given the desire to disqualify and jail Imran Khan, the hisparty PTI declared in a statement that "it is totally dishonorable and revolting how a mockery of law is continuing."
On the grounds that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which had previously disqualified him in a related case, had filed a complaint, Khan, 70, was punished in the Toshakhana case, which was reported last year.
The decision was made a day after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) dismissed a session court's ruling upholding the Toshakhana body of evidence's admissibility in Khan's criminal prosecution.
What is Toshakhana case?
The case concerns allegations that the former prime minister "intentionally hid" certain details of the gifts he received from the Toshaskhana during his time in office, as well as the proceeds from their disclosed deals. The Toshaskhana is a storehouse where gifts given to government officials by foreign governments are kept.
The PTI leader then turned toward the IHC, which had continued to conduct criminal investigations into the matter till June 8.
