Mizoram: 35-40 workers were present when the incident occurred around 10 am about 21 km from Aizawl, a police officer said.

Mizoram:  In a tragic incident, a railway bridge that was still under construction fell on Wednesday close to the Sairang district of Mizoram, killing at least 17 employees . Chief Minister Zoramthanga shared his sorrow on X and announced that rescue efforts are in progress. 

Senior Northeast Frontier Railway officials would also visit the site, according to Sabyasachi De, CPRO of NF Railways, who also said that railroad officers have flocked to the area. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia from PMMRF of Rs 2 lakh to each deceased person's next of kin and Rs 50,000 to each injured person.



Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the surviving family members of the deceased in a post on X (previously Twitter) and declared an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for each of the victims' next of kin. 

"Pained by the Mizoram bridge accident. Those who have lost loved ones deserve our condolences. May the injured person quickly heal. Rescue efforts are in progress, and those affected are receiving every aid that is available.

 


Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tweeted in response to the Mizoram railway overbridge collapse, "Grieved by the terrible tragedy. Officials from the state government, the railway, and the NDRF are present. a warlike rescue mission. Ex-gratia compensation amounts are as follows: 50,000 for mild injuries, 2 lakhs for catastrophic injuries, and 10 lakhs in cases of death.

Amit Shah spoke to Mizoram's Governor and CM

After 17 employees were killed when a railway bridge under construction fell in the state, Union Home Minister Amit Shah called with Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati and Chief Minister Zoramthanga and assured them that they will receive all aid available.

The horrible accident in Mizoram has me distraught. I have told the Governor and CM Mizoram of my willingness to offer any assistance. Rescue efforts are being carried out on-site by the NDRF and the local government. My sympathies go out to the mourning families. Praying for all who have been hurt to recover quickly," Shah posted on X, formerly Twitter.

 "Nine people have been saved thus far. Rescue efforts are being carried out on a war footing by NDRF, State administration, and Railway officials. Additionally, it is said that IIT experts gave the bridge girder technique their full approval. Additionally, a high-level inquiry committee has been established to look into the situation, according to railroad officials.

17 workers killed

Several others feared trapped

As 35 to 40 workmen were there when the disaster happened at 10 am, about 21 miles from Aizawl, police believe that more people may still be trapped at the scene. 

Currently, 17 bodies have been found among the wreckage, and many more are still unaccounted for, according to a police officer.

Mamata Banerjee on incident

According to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, some of the murdered employees in Mizoram came from her state's Malda area.Additionally, Banerjee said that she had directed officials to work with the Mizoram government to coordinate assistance with the rescue effort.

She posted on X, "Shocked to learn about the sad collapse of a railway bridge that was being built today in Mizoram, leading to the loss of life of several site workers, including several belonging to our Malda district. "I've told my chief secretary to immediately coordinate rescue/assistance operations with the Mizoram administration. 

The Malda district administration has been requested to get in touch with the grieving relatives and offer any assistance that they can. We will provide the impacted families' next of kin with just compensation as soon as possible. sympathy for the suffering and condolences to the surviving families of the departed. Watching the situation, Banerjee added.
