Russia imposes sanctions on ICC prosecutor for seeking Putin's arrest
The sanctions against Khan are a retaliation for the ICC's investigation into alleged war crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine.

On Friday, August 18, 2023, Russia imposed sanctions against British ministers and the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Kamal Khan. A travel ban and an asset freeze are included in the sanctions.
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, is wanted by the ICC prosecutor on war crimes accusations relating to the invasion of Ukraine. Russia has stated that the warrant against Putin is "void" and that it is not a member of the ICC.
In retaliation for the ICC's investigation into alleged war crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine, Khan is the target of sanctions. In retribution for the UK's backing for Ukraine and its sanctions against Russia, the British ministers are the target of penalties.
The ICC has declared that it is "undeterred" by the sanctions and will continue looking into claims of war crimes in Ukraine.54 British people, including journalists and BBC personnel, have been denied entry to Russia in addition to the penalties against Khan and the British politicians.
The newest escalation in the conflict between Russia and the West over the crisis in Ukraine is the imposition of sanctions.
The list includes British Deputy Defence Minister Annabel Goldie, who is in charge of supplying weaponry to Ukraine, and UK Sports Minister Lucy Fraser, who "actively pushes for the international sporting isolation of Russia."
Ukraine was attacked by Russia in February 2022. After initial success, Ukrainian forces launched counterattacks, forcing Russian troops to flee from a number of districts.
Western countries, led by the US, have invested enormous sums of money in Ukraine's military and humanitarian help. One of the key financial and military supporters has been the United Kingdom.
