Mumbai: The president of the Maharashtra NCP, Jayant Patil, claimed on Sunday that he was unaware of what had happened between Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar, despite rumors in political circles of a'secret' meeting between the NCP's founder and his nephew, the state's deputy chief minister, in Pune.

It was "not a secret meeting," Mr. Patil added.

Devendra Fadnavis, the state's deputy chief minister, claimed to be unaware of such a gathering.

The BJP leader told the reporters, "I can't add to your knowledge."

Ajit Pawar, the leader of the NCP's renegade MLAs, and Sharad Pawar are thought to have met on Saturday at a businessman's home in Pune. Ajit Pawar is the state's deputy chief minister.

Regional news networks broadcast images of Sharad Pawar coming at the businessman's home in the Koregaon Park neighborhood on Saturday around 1 p.m.Around five o'clock, he departed.Later, around 6:45 p.m., Ajit Pawar was observed driving away from the scene while ostensibly attempting to dodge cameras.

Jayant Patil stated that it was "not a secret meeting" while speaking with reporters on Sunday.

"I went to a mutual acquaintance with Pawar saheb and departed early.I have no knowledge of what happened after that, he claimed.

Mr. Patil said that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had sent a notification to his brother requesting information regarding a certain firm.

"He (Patil's brother) went to the ED office four days ago and provided all the information he knew. The ED notification should not be equated with the meeting from yesterday, the NCP leader argued.

Regarding rumors that he would join the Ajit Pawar camp, Mr. Patil asserted that he has already stated his position.

When asked if Sharad Pawar was with him, Mr. Patil responded, "Yes, don't let there be any doubt in your mind." He asserted that there is no division within the NCP and noted that both sides identify Sharad Pawar as their leader.

"Everyone puts his (Sharad Pawar's) photo and says they work for him, so there is no split," he said.

Even if there may have been a meeting between the deputy CM and Sharad Pawar, NCP MLA Rohit Pawar claimed there is "nothing wrong with maintaining communication in a family."

Ajit Pawar took oath as the deputy chief minister in the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition last month, in an unexpected occurrence that shocked political circles in Maharashtra. Eight more NCP MLAs who backed him took the oath of office as ministers.

The precise number of the 54 MLAs who support the organizations led by Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar is unknown.
