Ranil Wickremesinghe, the president of Sri Lanka, emphasized the necessity of conducting a thorough assessment of Sri Lanka's national security strategy in order to better comprehend the escalating international rivalries and preserve neutrality in the Indian Ocean region.

When speaking to a Naval gathering in the southern Galle region, Wickremesinghe stated that the review would take into account a wide range of variables, new economic trends, and the effects of climate change.

In order to develop current security policy, the President has already tasked a group chaired by a retired major general with reporting to the National Security Council.  According to him, the dynamics of the current environment show how the Indian Ocean is becoming a battleground for international dominance.

"On one front, a struggle for dominance between the United States and China is taking place across the vast Pacific Ocean. In the framework of Ukraine, a power struggle between the Western countries and Russia simultaneously develops. Even far-flung locales like Niger in Africa are included in this fight for influence, he claimed. Sri Lanka should preserve its neutrality in the Indian Ocean, according to Wickremesinghe.

Without a doubt, the Indian Ocean is home to the major commercial routes in the world, making Sri Lanka an important role at this time. It is essential that we chart a route free from involvement in these international conflicts as we navigate these seas, maintaining an unbiased posture. The protection of national security within this sphere must be our top priority, the president stated.

He said that submarine use had surged in the Indian Ocean. Due to this, the island nation's maritime security strategy should focus on creating a strong program specifically designed for submarine monitoring and control. A plan for the National Security Council's modernized security policies will be established when the review report has been put together.

Sri Lanka, which is experiencing its greatest economic crisis since gaining independence, has come under fire for increasing financial allocations for defense spending while maintaining smaller budgets for healthcare and education. To encourage peace with the Tamil minority, demands are made that the security forces be reduced in size and their level of presence in the previous war regions of the north and east.
