Cricket World Cup puts Narendra Modi Stadium in spotlight

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday that the world's largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad will host the high-profile ODI World Cup group encounter between India and Pakistan on October 15 in addition to the grand finale on November 19.

The tournament will start on October 5 with a match between reigning champions England and last year's runners-up New Zealand at the 1,32,000-seat Narendra Modi Stadium.

Pakistan is a challenge

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is hesitant to send its team to India for the ODI World Cup because, according to a PCB official, "Our participation in the World Cup and us playing in Ahmedabad on October 15 or in Mumbai if we qualify for semifinals will all be dependent on government clearance."

Additionally, Pakistan declined to play Australia in Bengaluru and Afghanistan on the spin-friendly Chennai pitch. The demand was denied by the ICC.

ICC confident

However, the ICC is "confident" that the Babar Azam-led squad will take part in the 50-over championship.

The international governing body, according to the ICC, "100% expects them to be there and has had no indications to the contrary" because Pakistan has a signed participation agreement to compete.

Stalled ties

In the aftermath of the 2008 terror attacks, in which 10 Pakistani terrorists killed over 165 people in Mumbai, India and Pakistan ceased visiting one another's countries.

The last time Pakistan played in India was in the T20 World Cup in 2016. Only the ICC competitions and the Asia Cup feature matches between the two sides.

AND....

The major event's two semifinal matches will take place on November 15 and 16 in Mumbai's Wankhede and Kolkata's Eden Gardens Stadium, two storied locations.

Twelve different locations will host World Cup games, including two for exhibition games. It is the first time the World Cup has entered northeast India thanks to Guwahati's selection to hold exhibition games.

This year's World Cup will include 48 matches amongst 10 teams.
