Friday's telephone chat between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi included the recent Wagner mutiny as well as the conflict in Ukraine.

The Kremlin said that PM Modi had backed the Russian leadership's "decisive actions" in handling the Wagner mercenary group's mutiny last Saturday.

The two presidents spoke on the phone less than a week after the Russian government stopped the Wagner Group, a private mercenary army led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, from staging a significant coup.

After seizing control of two significant south Russian cities, the private mercenary army halted its advance towards Moscow after the Kremlin, with the assistance of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, was able to negotiate a settlement with Prigozhin.

Later, Prigozhin denied wanting to depose the Russian government in a Telegram video message. He said that the march was in support of justice. Following the rebellion, concerns about Putin's ability to lead are being voiced, and the West predicted that the Russian leader was no longer "invincible."

The Russian president reportedly fired key players who were thought to have supported the 24-hour Wagner revolt, according to a Bloomberg story. A senior general was held for interrogation.

Security service members who are against Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu intensified internal calls for his dismissal. For months, Prigozhin has been publicly criticising Shoigu, a steadfast Putin friend, over the failure of the invasion of Ukraine.

With televised public events involving the military, business, and other groups, Putin tried to reassure important constituents throughout the week. Polls indicated that the majority of the population continued to support him, but among the ruling and corporate classes, there were growing concerns about his ability to maintain control.
