Why have tomato prices risen so dramatically across India, from Delhi to Karnataka?

A common household staple, tomatoes are seeing a significant increase in price in several regions in India as the heavy seasonal rains begin to fall.
Tomato prices have soared to over Rs 100 per kg in various regions, disrupting household finances in numerous states.
The Centre has promised that the price increase is only a "temporary seasonal phenomenon" and that rates would soon begin to decline.

Tomato prices in Karnataka increased dramatically during the past week, rising from Rs 40 per kilogramme in the third week of May to Rs 125 kilogrammes this week.
Similar to this, over the past week, tomato prices at Mother Dairy's Safal outlets in Delhi have virtually doubled to Rs 80 per kg.
Prices in Madhya Pradesh have skyrocketed to Rs 110 per kg.
What do official statistics indicate?
According to statistics from the department of consumer affairs, on June 27 the average tomato price throughout all of India was Rs 46 per kg.
The average price per kilogramme is Rs 50, while the highest price per kilogramme is Rs 122.
