Air India pilot refuses to fly 100 passengers including three BJP MPs from Gujarat to Delhi, here's why
The unusual situation occurred when the pilot of the aircraft refused to fly stating he had "exceeded" his duty hours, as per Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) norms, leaving the passengers in a state of anxiety.
MORE THAN 100 passengers including three BJP MPs were stranded at the Rajkot airport in Gujarat
About 100 people, including three BJP MPs, were left stranded at the Rajkot airport in Gujarat on Sunday night (July 23) due to an unforeseen delay to an Air India flight headed for Delhi. The unique circumstance arose when the aircraft's pilot refused to take off, claiming that he had "exceeded" his duty hours in accordance with Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) standards, putting the passengers in a state of fear.
After passengers boarded the Air India flight, which was scheduled to take off at 8.30 p.m. on July 23, the event occurred. Three politicians were aboard: Rajkot MP Mohan Kundariya, Jamnagar MP Poonam Maadam, and freshly elected Kesaridevsinh Jhala to the Rajya Sabha.
Air India issues statement
However, the airline claimed in a statement that AI404, which had been scheduled to travel between Rajkot and Delhi late that evening on July 23, had been delayed because of an operational issue.
"Thereafter, the cockpit crew was subject to Flight Duty Time Limit (FDTL) laws, making it impossible for them to conduct the flight in accordance with standards. An Air India representative stated that the FDTL guideline is non-negotiable and cannot be compromised in any way.
"Some passengers who needed to go to Delhi quickly were driven there before boarding an Air India or codeshare flight to Delhi. The remaining travelers received hotel accommodations, all meals, and the option to rearrange their reservations as desired with a full refund in case of cancellation, the representative continued.
A similar incident occurred earlier this month
Around 20 to 25 students were left stranded in a related event earlier this month when Air India flight AI186 from Vancouver to Delhi on July 2 was canceled owing to a technical problem. The University of British Columbia (UBC) students had described their trauma, saying that the flight had been originally scheduled to leave from Vancouver Airport at roughly 10.15 a.m. on July 2, but had been postponed twice before being cancelled.
Pilots grounded for inviting 'female friend' into cockpit
Air India took action against two pilots for allowing a "female friend" into the cockpit of a flight from Delhi to Leh earlier in June of this year.Following a complaint from the cabin crew regarding an unauthorized female passenger entering the cockpit of the AI-445 aircraft, the Air India management promptly took action against the captain and the co-pilot.
Both pilots have been grounded or removed from the roster by Air India after a female acquaintance of an AI-445 pilot entered the cockpit without following protocol, a top Air India official told the media.
The Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in response to the event, stated that "DGCA is aware of the issue and necessary action is being taken in the matter in accordance with the procedures."
