The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced that 38 National Democratic Alliance or NDA partners have confirmed their attendance at the meeting to be held in New Delhi on Tuesday, the day 26 like-minded opposition parties will huddle for the second time within a month to strategize for the elections, intensifying the pitched battle ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The opposition parties' Day 2 meeting in Bengaluru will primarily focus on discussing EVM machines, Lok Sabha seat sharing, the creation of a common minimum program, and choosing a name for the united front. The BJP, meanwhile, is hoping to keep its current allies and win new ones.
Top points on Opposition vs NDA meeting today
1. Following the dinner meeting with the opposition parties, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge declared, "Well begun is half done," prior to the major session slated for Tuesday.
2. Siddaramaiah, the chief minister of Karnataka, hosted a dinner gathering to kick off the first day of the opposition party's convention. After dinner, Congress leader BK Hariprasad predicted that the BJP will be overthrown in 2024 and that the discussion had began on a positive note.
3. A subcommittee for developing the alliance's shared minimum program and communication points for the general elections of 2024 is established in the draft agenda of the united Opposition meeting. This subcommittee will be responsible for planning the parties' combined program, which will include rallies, conventions, and agitation. The alliance's name is also up for discussion, and they have a plan to talk about how seat distribution will be decided on a state-by-state basis. The opposition parties can also talk about the EVM issue and recommend changes to the Election Commission. A shared secretariat for the prospective alliance was also established by the opposition leaders.
4. The chief ministers of MK Stalin, Nitish Kumar, Arvind Kejriwal, and Hemant Soren, as well as RJD leader Lalu Prasad, were among the guests at the dinner meeting. They were seated next to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee.
5. Among others at the meeting held by Siddaramaiah were Bihar deputy chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), Akhilesh Yadav (SP), Uddhav Thackeray(Shiv Sena-UBT), Farooq Abdullah (NC) and Mehbooba Mufti (PDP), besides Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M), D Raja (CPI),Jayant Chaudhary (RLD) and MDMK MP Vaiko.
6. JP Nadda, the head of the BJP, announced on Monday that 38 parties have confirmed their attendance at the NDA conference. He criticized the opposition leaders' efforts to unite as a "selfish" exercise meant to shield them from punishment in allegations of corruption involving more than 20 Lakh crore ..
7. The BJP, which was accused by its former allies of trampling on partners and eschewing consensus building on important issues, such as the farm laws that caused the party to sever ties with its oldest ally, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), is touting its credentials as being in the best position to lead a coalition of diverse parties by highlighting the NDA's expanded membership. According to party leaders, the increase in the number of NDA partners from 24 in 1998 to 38 currently shows how well-liked and accepted the party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are.
8. There will undoubtedly be long tails in both groups. In the 545-member Lok Sabha, just nine parties hold 10 seats or more (the nine represent 479 MPs). The 26 possible members of the opposition coalition and the 38 members of the NDA are very likely not represented in the Lok Sabha, as only 37 parties have representatives there.
9. The BJP also believes that alliances with groups like the Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS), Tamila Manila Congress, Kerala Congress (Thomas), and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMMK) will improve its prospects in the south, where it is not currently in power in any of the states.
10. Sources told news agency PTI that Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi spent time together on the first day of the Bengaluru summit discussing opposition unity and checking on each other's health.
