'Red' alert in Gujarat's Junagadh after heavy rain; Mumbai showers to continue. Top updates

Heavy to very heavy rain pounded several Gujarat districts and Saurashtra regions, triggering a flood-like situation in urban areas and isolating villages

Mumbai is set to have some relief from the heavy rains after experiencing nonstop rain on Saturday, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has dropped the Maharashtra capital's 'orange' signal to 'yellow' alert for Sunday. Raigad district will continue to be under an orange warning while Thane and Palghar were dropped from a red to an orange alert.

In Gujarat, numerous districts in the state's south and Saurashtra regions had heavy to extremely heavy rain on Saturday, causing urban centers to experience flood-like conditions and isolating villages as dams and rivers' water levels rose to dangerous levels.

Top updates on Maharashtra and Gujarat rain : 


1. After the water levels in Tansa Dam came dangerously close to the overflow thresholds on Saturday, the Thane district administration in Maharashtra issued a flood alert for villages in the Bhiwandi, Shahapur, and Vasai talukas.


2. The health department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a warning for leptospirosis due to an increase in cases this season, which coincides with Mumbai's ongoing, heavy rainfall this week.

3. On Saturday, the body of a 19-year-old Thane resident from Murbad was discovered along a river.Deepak Kumar Paswan, the victim, was employed by a media company and was from Uttar Pradesh. Paswan left for work on Tuesday, according to the police, but never came home.

4. In Irshalwadi, where 27 persons died in a landslide, the Raigad administration issued prohibitory orders in accordance with section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). It was claimed that the prohibition orders would be in place from July 23 to August 6. On Saturday, the third day of the search and rescue operation, the dead toll from the landslide in Irshalwadi hamlet in Maharashtra's Raigad district reached 27, while 81 people are still unaccounted for, according to an NDRF official.

5. A five-to-seven kilometre long traffic delay on the national highway occurred in Gujarat as a result of rain in the Navsari district. Later, Mumbai and Ahmedabad were opened to traffic. Due to the area's heavy rains, there was also a significant traffic bottleneck on National Highway 48 between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in Navsari.






6. The IMD predicts that Saurashtra and Kutch will continue to see light to moderate rain on July 24 and the Gujarat area on July 23, with isolated heavy to very severe rain. For Junagadh, Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Kutch, Surat, Valsad, Navsari, and Surat, a red alert has been issued.

 

7. Flood-like conditions were experienced in Gujarat's Junagadh due to heavy rain. After the city received 241 mm of rain in just 12 hours, from Saturday evening at 8 p.m., it was apparent that scores of parked cars and cattle were being carried away in raging waters. Wading through waist-deep water to reach safer areas was observed. Volunteers saved several of them from being swept away by strong currents.

8. In the Union Territory neighboring Gujarat, near the Silvassa town of Dadra and Nagar Haveli district, a father and son pair drowned after their car swept away. On Friday night as they attempted to cross a low-lying bridge, the two were caught in swiftly flowing floods.

9. In the city of Navsari, a father and his son perished in a backed-up sewer. While the man was being rescued, efforts were being made to find the son, according to news agency PTI.

10. The MeT department also advised fishermen to stay away from the north Gujarat coast from July 22 to July 26 due to the likelihood of squally weather conditions.
