New Delhi : In a cacophony of "INDIA, INDIA" and "Modi, Modi" chants, opposition and government MPs battled in parliament on Thursday, causing External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's speech on the country's foreign policy to be lost in the melee.
The chants of "Manipur, Manipur" were used by the opponents to draw attention to the three-month-old ethnic unrest in the northeastern state while attempting to keep things as they were in the upper chamber.
The Treasury benches rose in unison, their cries of "Modi, Modi" a fervent endorsement of the Prime Minister, as the slogans resonated throughout the Rajya Sabha hall disputing Mr. Jaishankar's words. Chants of "INDIA, INDIA"—the brand-savvy moniker of the opposition's new coalition—were in response.
The opposition party repeatedly interrupted Mr. Jaishankar's speech as he attempted to speak about the achievements of India's international strategy and the government of Narendra Modi's recent trips overseas. The opposition's clamor was labeled "partisan politics" by the minister.
Mr. Jaishankar bemoaned to reporters outside, "It is extremely unfortunate that the opposition is prioritizing partisan politics," lamenting their failure to recognize the accomplishments of the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, responded by accusing the prime minister of dodging his obligations to the legislature while aggressively campaigning in Rajasthan.
He is unwilling to defend the democratic process and the rule of law. Mr. Kharge reprimanded him for "disrespecting the Parliament."
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice as a result of the constant disruptions caused by the opposition members' demands regarding the Manipur situation during the legislative session.
The opposition also showed up in black during the parliamentary proceedings as a sign of protest, which was criticized by members of the ruling party.
Since last Thursday's start of the monsoon session of parliament, there have been numerous interruptions as opposition members demand a thorough debate of the Manipur issue and a statement from the prime minister.
