Won't Approach Wrestlers, Witnesses, Federation Chief Assures Court
A Delhi court has reserved its order on the bail petition of the outgoing Wrestling Federation of India chief.
The Delhi police told the court it is neither opposing the bail petition nor supporting it.New Delhi: The ex-president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment by multiple female wrestlers, has been granted bail, and the Delhi police has not objected.
The Delhi Rouse Avenue court reserved its decision at a bail hearing today and stated that the verdict would be delivered at 4 PM.
The attorney representing the wrestlers in court opposed the Federation chief's request for normal bond, arguing that Mr. Singh is a powerful figure who might try to sway witnesses in the case.
The attorney added that if Mr. Singh is given bail, a stringent condition must be put in place prohibiting him from approaching the witnesses or complainants.
Rajiv Mohan, the attorney for the WFI chief, informed the court that Mr. Singh has not threatened anyone and will not engage in such behavior.
The Delhi Police was then asked for its position by the court. "We are neither supporting nor opposing the bail petition," the police's attorney declared. The law has the final say.
The same court had granted Mr. Singh interim release on Tuesday for a period of two days. The suspended WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar was also released on bail.
The female wrestlers had earlier questioned the motives of the oversight body established by the government to look into the sexual harassment claims and said it was prejudiced towards Mr. Singh, a BJP MP.
The report by the six-person group, which is chaired by renowned Indian boxer MC Mary Kom, was turned in to the government but has not yet been made public.
Despite a chargesheet being lodged against him by the Delhi Police on June 15, the WFI chief has refused to resign. Mr. Singh is accused of stalking, criminal intimidation, and sexual harassment.
