BRICS Summit 2023: On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin justified his actions in Ukraine and asserted that they simply seek to put an end to the ongoing war that was "unleashed" by Western nations. He made this claim while addressing the opening plenary session of the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Some nations advocate for their hegemony, exceptionality, and ongoing colonialism and neo-colonialism policies. In an apparent jab at Western nations, especially the United States, Putin stated via video conference at the group summit, "I want to underline that the aim to preserve their hegemony in the globe led to a catastrophic crisis in Ukraine.
Putin accused the Western nations of supporting a "unconstitutional coup" in relation to the upheaval that occurred in Donbas in 2014."Thereafter, a war was faced by those who opposed the coup. He claimed that an eight-year battle of attrition was started against them.
The Russian President said, "Russia decided to support those who struggle for their future, language, culture, and traditions. Our activities in Ukraine are only motivated by the desire to put an end to the conflict the West started against the people of Donbas.
The Kremlin leader demanded de-dollarization during the discussion, but he also insisted that the BRICS nations needed to increase bank cooperation and extend settlements in local currencies.
The BRICS nations, according to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, will continue to support efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine dispute through discussion, mediation, and engagement. Ramaphosa added, "We are profoundly worried about conflicts around the world that continue to bring us great misery and hardship.
Putin previously attacked the West harshly during the BRICS Business Forum for punishing Moscow for its "special military operations" in Ukraine, calling the action "illegitimate."Additionally, he threatened to permanently halt Ukraine's grain exports.
Putin stated that a wartime agreement to facilitate Ukrainian grain shipments, which is essential for the world's food supply, would not resume until his conditions, the easing of restrictions on Russian food and agricultural products, are met. He was seated at a desk with a white notebook in front of him and a Russian flag behind him.
The Russian leader argued that the West's attempts to financially punish and isolate Russia for sending troops into Ukraine amount to "illegitimate sanctions practice and illegal freezing of assets of sovereign states, which effectively amounts to them trampling upon all the basic norms and rules of free trade."
