For Haryana Violence Petition, A Rare Move By Supreme Court Chief Justice

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud - who was leading a constitution bench - went to his chamber, examined the documents related to the application and quickly formed a special panel of judges for the Haryana case.

The violence in Haryana has claimed six lives, including two security personnel.

New Delhi: In a rare move, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud scheduled an urgent hearing for a case about the riots in Haryana's Nuh district on Wednesday, interrupting a constitution bench of the Supreme Court, a special group of at least five judges that can rule on matters impacting the constitution.

In order to address a plea for a ban on demonstrations staged by right-wing organizations Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the court suspended talks on the now-scrapped Article 370 of the constitution, which granted special powers to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

CU Singh, the attorney for petitioner journalist Shaheen Abdullah, met Justice Aniruddha Bose on Wednesday morning to request an early hearing following the violence that resulted in the deaths of six people, including two security officials, as well as extensive vandalism and burning.

Mr. Singh took the case to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud after Justice Bose advised him to do so and emphasized the necessity for prompt action. Even though the Chief Justice was asked to consider the case in the morning, CU Singh underlined the gravity of the situation over lunch.

In response, Chief Justice Chandrachud, who was in charge of the constitution bench, went to his chamber, looked over the application's supporting documents, and quickly convened a special bench made up of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti. He also instructed the registry to schedule a hearing for 2 p.m., according to sources.

A member of the constitution bench named Justice Sanjiv Khanna took part in the Nuh case hearing, which was finished at 2:15 p.m. At 2:00 p.m., the Constitution Bench resumed its discussion of Article 370.
