The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration on Wednesday commended the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for the historic accomplishment as India created history with Chandrayaan-3's successful soft-landing on the Moon.

NASA administrator Bill Nelson wrote on X (previously Twitter): "Congratulations @isro on your successful Chandrayaan-3lunarSouthPole landing! In addition, congrats to India for becoming the fourth nation to successfully soft-land a spacecraft on the Moon. We're happy to work with you on this mission.

The success of Chandrayaan-3

On Wednesday, India made history when its Chandrayaan-3 mission successfully touched down on the surface of the far side of the Moon. India has become the first nation to accomplish this accomplishment by putting the Vikram Lander module on the southernmost point of the moon.

Upon congratulating the ISRO team, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked that "India's successful Moon mission is not just India's alone... this success belongs to all of humanity."

With the Chandrayaan-3 mission, India became the first nation to set foot on the lunar south pole and the fourth nation overall, behind the United States, China, and the former Soviet Union, to do so.

India became the fourth country in the world to accomplish the feat, but the first to land on the south pole of the moon, as Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander did as planned. After traveling 3.84 lakh kilometers over the course of more than 40 days, the lander made a close approach to the moon's South Pole.

The goals of Chandrayaan-3, which is a follow-up mission to Chandrayaan-2, are to show safe and soft landings on the lunar surface, lunar wandering, and in-situ scientific investigations.
