Lok Sabha Speaker Upset, Won't Attend Parliament For Now: Sources

Om Birla was notably absent from the Speaker's seat when the proceedings started today.

Om Birla is said to be upset over the disruptions in parliament.

New Delhi: According to sources close to him on Wednesday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has voiced his extreme disgust with both the ruling party and the opposition over the ongoing disruption of parliamentary activity and has threatened to boycott sessions until lawmakers behave honorably.

On Wednesday, Mr. Birla was noticeably missing from the Speaker's chair when the Lok Sabha session started. The meeting was postponed till 2 p.m. and for the day as a result of loud protests that persisted.

As opposition members continued to demonstrate in support of Manipur and demanded a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the state's situation, which has been devastated by months of ethnic violence, the lower house was postponed for the day.

Kirit Solanki, a BJP member who presided over the meeting, pleaded with the opposition to maintain order but ultimately decided to adjourn the meeting for the day.

The lower house was supposed to consider and pass the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, but due to the adjournment ,  neither discussion nor voting could take place. This also made the BJP whip irrelevant.

The behavior of the opposition and treasury benches during the passage of measures in the LokSabha on Tuesday apparently incensed Mr. Birla.

They added that the Speaker holds members' decorum during proceedings in the highest regard and holds the dignity of the House in the highest regard.

The speaker has expressed his concern over the continuous interruptions in parliament since the monsoon session started on July 20 to both the opposition and Treasury benches.
