Chidambaram posted on X (formerly Twitter) that "Pakistan is following the Indian model in preventing the main opposition leader from running in elections."

The Congress MP's response came shortly after the former Pakistani prime minister was taken into custody at his residence in Lahore in connection with the Toshakhana case involving the illicit purchase and sale of state gifts when he was in office. He received a three-year prison term as well as a five-year suspension from engaging in active politics.

The case stems from a complaint made by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) alleging that Khan purposefully withheld information on the presents he kept from the Toshakhana. On October 21, 2022, the ECP banned Khan for making "false statements and incorrect declarations."

Six of the seven timepieces purportedly included in the presents are Rolexes. According to Pakistan's communications minister, the most expensive of them was a "Master Graff limited edition" believed to be worth 85 million rupees ($300,000).

Chidambaram also alluded to Rahul Gandhi's two-year prison sentence for criminal defamation, which ultimately resulted in his removal from office as a Lok Sabha MP. According to the Congress, this action was taken in an effort to "muffle Rahul Gandhi's voice" and prevent him from running in the 2018 general election.

The former Congress president's conviction was stayed by the Supreme Court on Friday. A bench of Justices BR Gavai, PS Narasimha, and PV Sanjay Kumar ruled that the trial court failed to provide cogent reasons for inflicting the maximum punishment of two years in prison provided by the Indian Penal Code for defamation .F
