PM Modi Leaves For Four-Day Visit To South Africa, Greece
PM Modi said that BRICS has been actively engaged in fostering a robust collaboration agenda across diverse sectors, and serves as a platform to deliberate upon issues of significance for the entire Global South.
PM Modi said he looks forward to holding bilateral meetings with some of the leaders in Johannesburg.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left on a four-day trip to Greece and South Africa. PM Modi will travel to South Africa to attend the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg from August 22–24 at Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa's invitation.
According to PM Modi, BRICS has been actively promoting a robust agenda of collaboration across all sectors and acts as a forum for discussion of problems important to the whole Global South.
PM Modi stated that he is eager to meet with "some of the leaders present in Johannesburg" on a personal level.
"BRICS has been pursuing a robust agenda of sector-specific collaboration . We appreciate that the BRICS have evolved into a forum for deliberating and addressing problems that are important to the whole Global South, such as the need for development and international system reform, the PM stated.
The world economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa are together known as BRICS.
August 22–24 will see the BRICS summit. Third time to South Africa, PM Modi will also be commemorating the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the two countries.
South Africa is in charge of the BRICS this year. "BRICS and Africa: Partnership for mutually accelerated growth, sustainable development, and inclusive multilateralism" is the topic of this year's summit.
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the BRICS Summit has been held virtually for the past three years. This will be the first in-person summit in that time.
The PM continued, "I will also participate in BRICS-Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue events that will be place as part of the BRICS Summit activities during my stay in Johannesburg. I'm looking forward to speaking with a variety of the invited guest nations at this event.
After three years of virtual meetings due to the COVID-19 epidemic, this will be the first BRICS Summit to take place in person.
While the Russian delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Russian President Vladimir Putin will virtually attend the 15th BRICS Summit. Additionally, he will take part in a special event with the theme "Brics - Africa outreach and Brics plus dialogue".
Numerous nations, especially from the African continent, have been invited, and it is being organized as a follow-up to the BRICS Summit.
On Friday, the PM will depart from South Africa and go to Athens, Greece, at the invitation of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Greek prime minister. "I've never been to this remote country before.
I have the privilege of becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Greece in 40 years, the PM stated in the announcement.
"Our two civilizations have been in contact for more than 2,000 years. Today's common principles of democracy, the rule of law, and pluralism have reinforced our bonds.
Regarding the ties between India and Greece's civilizations, the PM stated that cooperation in a variety of areas, including trade and investment, defense, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges, has been drawing our two countries closer together.
I'm excited to visit Greece and start a new chapter in our complex relationship, he remarked.
