'There has to be harmony...': Supreme Court asks Centre to form committee to look into cases of hate speech

The apex court was hearing a case involving alleged blatant hate speech at rallies in different states, including Haryana, where recent communal riots left six people dead.

On Friday, the Supreme Court ordered the Center to set up a commission to investigate cases of hate speech, stating that there must be harmony and peace across communities.A case involving alleged outright hate speech at rallies in several states, including Haryana, where recent communal disturbances left six people dead, was being heard by the Supreme Court. The accused hate speech called for the death of members of a certain community and their social and economic boycott.

When the Center was represented by Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti instructed Nataraj to seek advice and tell the judge by August 18 regarding the committee.  "The communities must live in peace and harmony with one another.Every community has a responsibility.Nobody can allow hate speech since it is a bad problem, the bench said. 


What's the court ordered? 


The petitioner was also instructed by the top court to gather all supporting evidence, including any recordings, and provide it to the nodal officials named in line with its decision as of October 21,2022.

The application, submitted by journalist Shaheen Abdullah, has made reference to the order of the Supreme Court from August 2 that stated, "We hope and trust that the state governments and police will ensure that no hate speeches irrespective of the identity are made against any community and that there is no physical violence or damage to the properties." 


Court's directives came following Nuh violence


After crowds attacked the BrajMandal Yatra or a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) procession in Haryana's Nuh on July 31, six persons, including two house guards and a cleric, perished in the ensuing confrontations.In the aftermath, Gurugram also saw isolated acts of violence.
