Watch: First Selfie By Lander On Moon Shows Rover Pragyan Rolling Out

Chandrayaan-3 successfully performed a soft landing on the moon on Wednesday evening, making India the 4th country to have successfully landed on the lunar surface.

New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation has released the first selfies taken by India's robots Vikram and Pragyan from the moon's surface, marking the arrival of the moment that a billion Indians have been anticipating with bated breath.

Lander Chandrayaan-3 As the Pragyan rover moved slowly, Vikram captured photographs and a video of its ramp.

ISRO tweeted the video along with the following statement: "... and here is how the Chandrayaan-3 Rover ramped down from the Lander to the Lunar surface."

India became the fourth nation to successfully land on the moon as Chandrayaan-3 completed a soft landing on the moon at 6:04 PM on Wednesday. The latest video posted by ISRO shows the Pragyan rover emerging from the surface after approximately four hours.

The Pragyan rover's initial track markings have now been permanently indented into the moon's surface.

The Pragyan rover's solar panel is visible in the color footage, which the Indian space agency also shared. The Pragyan rover's lovely shadow is also visible on the lunar surface.

The achievement of Chandrayaan-3 is noteworthy since no previous spacecraft has ever been able to make a soft landing close to the South Pole of the moon. The south pole is full of craters and deep pits and lies far from the equatorial region that was the objective of earlier missions, including the crewed Apollo landings.

A closer look also reveals that Vikram has landed in what appears to be a rather plain area, which should allow Pragyan to perform its moonwalk.

There will be 14 days of daylight on the moon where Vikram has landed, and the rover has already begun a number of scientific investigations. The Chandrayaan-3 mission's discoveries could increase and broaden our understanding of lunar water ice, which has the potential to be one of the moon's most valuable resources.

PM Modi will probably see much better media from ISRO when he comes on Friday.
