New Parliament, Day 1: M Kharge vs Nirmala Sitharaman On GST, Women's Bill

Speaking in the new parliament, Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that the reservation will only be manipulated by political parties to choose uneducated voiceless women. Nirmala Sitharaman said he is making "sweeping statements".

New Delhi: Today's heated exchange between Congressman Mallikarjun Kharge and Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman was brought on by the planned women's reservation bill, which has been approved by the cabinet.

Speaking in the new parliament, Mr. Kharge claimed that political parties would simply use the reserve to select illiterate, voiceless women who were unqualified for the job. One of the BJP's most outspoken lawmakers, Ms. Sitharaman, angrily objected. She claimed that Mr. Kharge was making "sweeping statements".

Political parties frequently select unqualified women because of the lower literacy rate among women from Scheduled Castes. Mr. Kharge, who is also the Congress Leader in the Rajya Sabha, claimed that they never pick those who are intelligent and skilled in combat.

What half ticket? Mr. Kharge yelled in response to the treasury benches' complaint. We're referring to a third ticket... Take a seat, and keep quiet. I am aware of how parties select Scheduled Caste individuals who are backward.

"We admire the leader of the opposition, but it is totally unacceptable for her to generalise that all parties select women who are ineffective. Our Prime Minister and our party have given us all more power. Droupadi Murmu, the president, is a strong lady. According to Nirmala Sitharaman, every MP from our party is a strong woman.

She continued that despite having female presidents, such broad generalisations might apply to Congress. She continued, "But I have issue with him generalising about all parties.

"Women from lower socioeconomic classes.Scheduled Castes, he responded, "don't have the opportunities she did.

Without backing down, Ms. Sitharaman yelled, "Who is the President?I cannot insult people in this way as the leader of the opposition. unable to distinguish between women.

The two leaders had previously spat over the Goods and Services Tax, with Mr. Kharge claiming that federalism had been "weakening" and the states were not receiving their fair share of tax money.Ms. Sitharaman had vehemently opposed, saying that no state is due even a single cent.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has requested in writing from both leaders that they provide their statements by the end of the day.

The women's reservation bill, which has been waiting for years, has also drawn criticism from Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party. It was referred to be a bill to deceive women before the 2024 elections by Delhi minister Atishi.

She claimed that the BJP had no concern in the welfare or well-being of women. She said that a closer examination of the bill's provisions revealed it to be the "Mahila Bewakoof Banao" bill.

The measure grants 33 percent of the seats in the state and Lok Sabha to women. Following a delimitation process, the reservation will go into effect and last for 15 years. After every exercise in delineation, the seats designated for women will be switched.

The law was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his opening remarks to the new Parliament. Without mentioning the party, he took a shot at Congress, saying, "The House has attempted to pass this bill in the past, and women's reservations have been a topic of discussion for many years." can boast that history has been written.

Today, the Indian parliament made a historic move to a new structure on Delhi's Central Vista, signalling the end of an era.  The old British-era structure will be referred to as "Samvidhan Sadan" because there is where the Constituent Assembly met to craft the Constitution.
