NEW DELHI:  In preparation for the G20 Summit, US President Joe Biden arrived in New Delhi on Friday night. He will shortly meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the latter's residence on Lok Kalyan Marg in the centre of the nation's capital.

Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser for the United States, predicted that the bilateral meeting between President Biden and Prime Minister Modi will result in progress on issues raised during Modi's state visit to Washington, DC, including the GE jet engine deal, India's decision to purchase Predator drones, cooperation on 5G/6G, and the civil nuclear domain.

In his talk with Modi, Biden will also touch on the subject of "critical, fundamental values" that the US upholds.

Sullivan also stated that the US had a "deep stake in stewarding the G20 and making sure that it remains a central mechanism for global coordination on all the major challenges" since it would take over the group's presidency in 2025–2026 during a briefing on Air Force One as Biden travelled from DC to Germany, where he stopped for a refuelling stop on his way to Delhi.

However, there was still "some distance to travel" before a final communique, according to Sullivan, who claimed that coordinators had recently been working "all day and all night" on a statement. He continued by saying that the US believed a joint statement could be achieved and was prepared to "do its part to deliver it."

Will every nation step up, act responsibly, and be constructively? We shall receive a joint statement if the response to that question is yes. But it's too early to know," Sullivan remarked, clearly alluding to US perceptions of Chinese and Russian obstructionism.

Sullivan stated, "We believe that connectivity from India, across the Middle East, to Europe is extremely important and will bring a significant number of economic benefits, as well as strategic benefits, to all of the countries involved." This statement was made amid reports that I2U2 (the grouping that includes India, Israel, UAE, and US) will make a significant announcement regarding infrastructure on the sidelines of the summit.

The bilateral meeting with Modi would take place at the PM's residence, Sullivan said in response to a question about its nature and press access.

This is not your normal bilateral trip to India, complete with meetings in the Prime Minister's office and a full schedule. This is the G20 host hosting a sizable group of leaders in his home while adhering to the protocols he has established. However, Sullivan pledged to deliver a "transparent and thorough" summary of the meeting.
